Homework

I strongly believe in the power of play and the importance of letting children be children. Further, research does not indicate significant benefits of homework at the elementary level. I believe that when students give us all of their day, they deserve to have all of their night. I would love them to read 20 minutes every night, that means they spend time looking at books, practicing letters, or being read to by an older sibling, caregiver, or parent. The only optional homework I am sending home is a monthly choice board, this gives you an idea of where your child is at and only takes a couple minutes. First month I send an optional fine motor skill activities that is purposeful play. The choice board is optional and should not be used as a chore, but a fun activity and I will let them pick from the prize box if they complete any of it and turn it in at the beginning of the next month. I do have a "family project" for our class bulletin board each month. This is meant to be a fun activity that allows the child a creative project from home at school. I would love you to eat dinner as a family and ask them how their day was; enjoy your child’s extracurricular activities without worrying about homework and know that your child is working hard at school each day and has earned their evening playtime!

Again, I highly encourage you to read a book of choice with your child each evening.

Please Note: If a student exhibits off-task behaviors during the school day and fails to complete an assignment, the assignment will be sent home incomplete. If you choose to complete this with your child, it will be time spent encouraging the importance to your child and can make a difference.

Here Are Some Great Links and Options for Learning at Home

ELA-Phonics Practice from Teach your Monster to Read is an award-winning series of games which helps children to master the key first stages of reading.  It's been created by the Usborne Foundation, led by Peter Usborne (of Usborne Publishing).

We're using it at school and your child will benefit more from the game if they can play at home. It’s free to play on a PC and laptop, or you can download the Teach Your Monster to Read app from the app store on phones and tablets.

To play on the website, visit teachyourmonstertoread.com

Child's username is their first name (TANYA) and if there is a student with the same first name add the first initial of last name only-no spaces (PRAXTONB and PRAXTONC). Children can log in to your child’s game using these details from home if you choose.

MATH from Bedtime Math

I love the reading and math engagement from this free website and app.  If you are not great at math or you are a lover of math this is a great way to encourage your child to read and do math before tucking them in at night. Below the activities you’ll also find links to their research-proven app and fun videos.

Ready for school?

Make the first weeks less stressful:

-Minimize outside commitments and appointments.

-Have healthy snacks ready after school. If you allow eating in the car, bring a snack for the ride home.

-Plan favorite family meals for the week (comfort food)!

-Allow kids time to decompress and be kids. There will be melt downs, kids work very hard at school to control emotions and behaviors.  They feel comfortable at home with you and able to express themselves. Give hugs and love them. Let them know how proud of them you are!

-Please don’t believe everything they say about me and school, just as I will not believe everything, they say about you, the family, and their home life.

-When asking about their day try keeping the questions more open ended,

“What is one thing you learned today?”

“What is one thing you would change about today?”

“What did you do that was kind for someone else?”

“What is something you are thankful for today?”

Ask a silly specific question such as, “What color were your teacher’s shoes? Did ____ wear a pony tail in her hair? What was on ____’s shirt?”
